Any company can be in business employing several good people and never be successful. A professional baseball team can have a few great athletes and still be unable to have a winning record. To become a winning team you need much more than good or great people, you need the right people. The right people don’t always have to be the best or hardest working members of the team but rather the ones who have the desire to do more or give more than others to reach a higher standard of success.

The 2015 Kansas City Royals won the Central Division, and then beat the Houston Astros from the Western Division followed by beating the Toronto Blue Jays from the Eastern Division to win the American League Pennant. Then they won the World Series by beating the New York Mets. They did all of this with a team that worked together as a team and not relying on just a couple players or even one great player. So how did they accomplish this? By having a goal in mind and striving to work together, each one knowing his part and committing to practice and training every day, not giving up even when they lost a few games. The best teams or companies must have a plan and a strategy to focus on and that begins with the fundamentals of the business.

Training is a good place to start but continued training is very essential to both a sporting team as well as a successful company. Practice is also needed. Have we not all heard the phase “practice makes perfect”? Well I believe that only perfect practice makes perfect. Reviewing the basic fundamentals and procedures are very important. Everyone must also know their position or station so that the team can work together as one. In order to do this, leaders will be needed on all levels. Leadership is an important part to the formula of winning, leaders who will work side by side with their people to insure that everyone is of the same mind set. This can be done through communication on all levels so that the focus of the end goal can be achieved with a high percentage rate. It is a very good idea to have a mission statement which everyone can have an ideal to look to and believe in. Some companies have pictures on office walls of where they want to be in the future and sporting teams have trophies in their locker rooms to show the success of the franchise.

We may not be the Kansas City Royals but we are winning our division every day by sticking to the fundamentals and being our customers’ best supplier. I have worked for PRIER Products for five years and I have seen a lot of people come and go in that time. For the ones who were there before me and for the ones who have come after and stayed, most have become the team players who are willing to do what it takes to move into the future and to become the best company in our industry. We start with a mission statement that reminds us daily where we are headed and how we will achieve our goals always remembering to have fun and enjoy our work as a winning team.
