C-134 | PRIER's Original Design

PRIER C-134 provides a year round source of water to areas of structures that are subject to freezing temperatures. The hydrant valve is connected to the supply piping in the heated portion of the structure, eliminating the possibility of freezing. Ordering the C-234 gives you the same style hydrant but with a vandalproof extended lockshield and operating key.

The PRIER C-134 is the original freezeless hydrant that is made in the same heavy pattern fashion that made it famous. It is available in stock lengths from 1-1/2" to 24". Longer sizes are available on request.

Additional Info

Prier has manufactured the C-134 Freezeless Hydrants from 1949 until today. This Freezeless Hydrant has truly passed the tests of time. It is a simple operating product that is fairly simple to repair.

Possible Repair Issues for the C-134 Freezeless Wall Hydrant:

1. When the water is running there is water leaking from behind the handle

This is a common maintenance occurrence for any packed valve of any brand or manufacture. It is overcome by simply tightening the packing nut with a crescent wrench. This will force the packing tighter around the stem to eliminate leakage.

Occasionally, the packing will need to be replaced if the packing nut has been repeatedly tightened.

The parts required for this is a C-134KT-803 Packing Kit.

2. The hydrant drips after shutoff

Since a Freezeless Hydrant actually shuts off inside the heated portion of the structure, the water inside the hydrant will drain out after shutoff. The shutoff point could be any distance from 4" to 24" or more inside the structure. This installation should also be pitched to allow the water to easily drain out of the hydrant. The hydrant may drip for up to 60 seconds after shutoff. If the water continues to drip after that time, you most likely need to replace the bibb washer.

To determine what bibb washer you require, you need to determine the type of stem in the hydrant. That can be accomplished in a few different manners.

   1.   Date of Installation:

Before 1972 Prier utilized a 1/4 L Beveled Bibb Washer for our Freezeless Hydrants. The appropriate Part Number for that item is C-135KT-802.

After 1972 Prier used a OO Beveled Bibb Washer for this style of Freezeless Hydrant. That Part Number is C-134KT-802.

   2.   Determine Type of Stem inside the Freezeless Hydrant

To determine the proper replacement bibb washer, you need to determine the following:

a. Length of the stem, from brass tip to brass tip. Do not include the rubber bibb washer in this measurement.

b. The "A" Dimension as shown on the picture below. This "A" Dimension will either be 1/2" or 9/16". A caliper may be necessary to determine this dimension.

3. Water is leaking from the hydrant inside my house.

Unfortunately, your Freezeless Hydrant is broken, most likely beyond repair.  This happens when the water cannot drain out of the Freezeless Hydrant, it freezes, expands and ruptures the copper shaft of the Freezeless Hydrant inside the structure.  The most common reasons for this problem is that the garden hose was left attached to the hydrant during freezing weather, or the hydrant was not installed with the proper drainage pitch.

DO NOT OPERATE THE HYDRANT

IF THIS IS OCCURRING!

Since the Hydrant shuts off inside the house, if it stays in the off position you will not get water inside the structure.

IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO REMOVE THE HANDLE TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL OPERATION UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS REPAIRED BY YOUR PLUMBER!

4. The handle is missing from my Freezeless Hydrant or Angle Sill Faucet

For any one of numerous reasons, your handle may be missing. Prier's handle is unique to our products, it has two flats and two round sides. This style handle mates perfectly with our stem-end for a snug fit and years of reliable operation.

The required part number is C-134KT-805.

5. How do I convert to Loose Key Vandalproof Design?

Prier Freezeless Hydrants and Angle Sill Faucets can be converted after installation from handle operated to Loose Key Vandalproof Design. This design allows for operation only with the provided operating key. It prevents operation of the Freezeless Hydrant or Angle Sill Faucet by vice grips or needle nose pliers.

Commonly this change occurs to prevent unauthorized usage of the Freezeless Hydrant or Angle Sill Faucet. To convert to Loose Key Vandalproof Operation, order the Prier Loose Key Conversion Kit, Part Number C-134KT-804.

6. Damaged stem that requires replacement

Occasionally the stem of the Prier Freezeless Hydrant gets damaged beyond repair. This is most commonly caused by the hydrant being operated by pliers and damaging the brass on the end.

To determine the proper replacement stem, you need to determine the following:

1. Length of the stem, from brass tip to brass tip. Do not include the rubber bibb washer in this measurement.

2. The "A" Dimension as shown on the picture below. This "A" Dimension will either be 1/2" or 9/16". A caliper may be necessary to determine this dimension.

7. I need a complete rebuild kit

Part number C-134KT-807 includes Prier's oval handle and screw, stem packing and beveled bibb washers for both pre-1972 and post-1972 hydrants.

Before 1972 Prier utilized a 1/4 L Beveled Bibb Washer for our Freezeless Hydrants.

After 1972 Prier used a OO Beveled Bibb Washer for this style of Freezeless Hydrant.
