‘Tis the Season to Check on Your Hydrant

At PRIER, our valves are designed to last the life of the plumbing system, and they typically do, however there can be some maintenance issues. We also design our products to be simple to maintain for the plumber or the user. If you are a proficient DIYer, you can do most of these fixes, if not, call a professional and let your plumber handle the problem.

Since your PRIER valves are made in Kansas City, MO, parts for all of our valves are readily available from our distributors throughout the country.

Your valve is leaking inside your home: This is a big one, probably time to call a plumber. This typically happens when something is trapping the water inside of your wall hydrant; possibly a hose was left attached during cold weather, a hose quick connect is trapping water, some type of irrigation device is left on the valve, or your valve could have been installed in a way that did not allow the water to drain out of the valve once the hose was disconnected. The water in the valve has expanded and burst the copper pipe inside of the structure. Due to the extreme cold this winter, we’ve seen many more of these than in previous years.

Your valve is leaking from the vacuum breaker (cap on the top of the valve): This is typically a simple repair. The vacuum breaker has begun to leak. This problem often occurs when the hose is left on the valve and the plastic cap is ruptured by freezing, or the rubber seating surface needs to be replaced.  First, identify what type of valve you have and match it to one of the valves in the videos below:

Your valve is leaking from the spout, just keeps dripping: This can be a simple repair as well. A freezeless wall hydrant shuts off inside the heated portion of the structure; therefore the water inside the hydrant will drain out after shutoff. The shutoff point could be any distance from 4″ to 24″ inside the structure. This installation should also be pitched to allow the water to easily drain out of the hydrant. The hydrant may drip for up to 60 seconds after shutoff. If the water continues to drip after that time, you most likely need to replace the seat washer. Your valve is leaking from behind the handle: This is a common maintenance occurrence for any packed valve of any brand or manufacture. It is overcome by simply tightening the packing nut with a crescent wrench. This will force the packing tighter around the stem to eliminate leakage. Occasionally, the packing will need to be replaced if the packing nut has been repeatedly tightened.
