Here are a few things we all can do that could help us reach that goal:
- Stay active: You want to live a long healthy life, right? Get routine check-ups, take a walk through the park, play a pickup game! Each step towards better health is a great one!
- Make a difference: With a busy schedule, it is hard to find time to help others or your community. Make time to make a difference! Volunteer at a place that could work around your schedule. My family and I choose community clean ups; it is most convenient for us as we have two little ones. I grab a bag, my double stroller and go!
- Be a teacher with the ability to learn: One of the greatest gifts of being a parent is teaching. Before children enter school, we are their first teacher. Although my journey as a parent is only beginning, I feel my children have learned many things from my husband and I. Coincidentally, I have learned more from my children than I ever thought I would! You don’t have to be a parent or have a degree to be a good teacher, though. Encarta defines the word “teach” as “imparting knowledge on someone.” If you know something really well and it can help others, teach them! Exchange knowledge with others; the best teachers have the ability to learn, too. Our Controller, Cindy Coats says “you learn something new every day.” I certainly agree; I have been here 7+ years and there isn’t a day I don’t learn something new at PRIER and at home.
- Take time to listen: One of my favorite things to do is to listen to senior citizens/war veterans. Their perspective of life is very different than most of us. My senior citizen friends have lived most of their lives, and can offer tons of advice on what to avoid and things to invest in while you still have your youth. I also have a few friends who are war veterans; some have been to war more than once. Each of them agree that life is short and we should make the best of each opportunity we are given (in other words, become all you are meant to be!).
- Live like you are dying: Life is short, leave a concrete footprint! Make sure that when you leave this Earth, you made it a better place for someone. Cherish your loved ones, use kind words, and live each day like it’s your last. Give everything your all, be afraid to fail but not afraid to fall!
