10K the Healthy Way

Pacer is a free mobile app primarily used to track steps. There are many other features within the Pacer app as well; you can also log your weight, blood pressure, join groups, and track your personal exercise goals.

If you are unsure what goal to set as a beginner, Pacer sets a general goal of 10,000 steps per day. The idea of 10,000 steps to better health was originally populated by the Japanese, and later adopted by US health officials. Most agree that you can greatly reduce health risks by taking at least 10,000 steps daily; or about 5 miles a day.

I utilize all features of this app but my favorite part is the ability to join groups. You can choose a group based off of the goal you would like to reach and the amount of time you would like to reach it. For example, I wanted to lose 20 pounds in 3 months; I found a group that had the same goals! Once you join the group, your progression is posted where others can see. I am not much of a competitor, but this truly motivated me to stay on track!

A bonus feature with Pacer is that it syncs to MyFitness Pal, an app used record to daily food consumption. Many nutrition experts believe that along with exercise, a healthy diet is a necessity. When you sync Pacer to Myfitness Pal, the amount of calories burned through exercise in Pacer allows more calories to be consumed in MyFitness pal. Pretty cool, huh?

There are only two cons I can think of while using this app. One con is that the phone has to be on you at all times to ensure each step you take is being tracked. The second con is that you have to have a phone that apps can be downloaded to (Android or iPhone).

Whether you choose an app, prefer a clip-on pedometer, or a watch, each help you make a healthier step into your future. Invest in yourself, GET ACTIVE!
