• Originally In 1867, Memorial Day was established to honor and remember the Union and Confederate soldiers that lost their lives during the Civil War.
• Today, in 2014, Memorial Day exists to honor and remember all men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Services.
• The original holiday was called “Decoration Day” because flowers were used to decorate the graves of the soldiers that died during the Civil War. Today, flags are used to decorate the graves.
• The practice to call this holiday Memorial Day did not become popular until after World War II.
• It was not an officially U.S. holiday until 1967.
• Up until 1971, the holiday was celebrated on May 30th each year. Now, it is observed on the last Monday of May, as a result of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968.
As for me, Memorial Day means a great deal. On this holiday I honor and remember my grandfather who served in World War I and passed in 1970, my father who served in World War II and passed in 1999, and my friends that lost their lives during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1970. I, personally, am a Vietnam Veteran and know what it is like to be “not so honored.”
To give your life for one’s country is the ultimate price to pay for freedom. I pray that we never take for granted those service men and women that made the sacrifice to keep us free. We, here at PRIER, want to send our deepest condolences to those families that have lost love ones while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This Memorial Day we will remember and continue to honor their memory.
