Inspired by Technology

Our switch to more modern software inspired me to use more technology in my personal life. Recently I tried a new app that combined exercise with technology. Have you ever toured your city and noticed bicycle stations? These bicycles can be rented by the half hour. You can take a quick 30 minute ride or keep it all day! There have been times where I wanted to rent a bike but noticed the station was empty. I called the number on the rental station and Brian, a member of kansascity.bcyle.com suggested I try B-Cycle Now. B-Cycle Now is an app that shows all the public bike sharing stations in the city, and even has up to the minute stock information for every station. On the app, there is a map displaying stations that list the number of bikes available at that location. Once you click on an icon, it shows the exact station location. I was able to find a station near Westport and Main. You enter a little information about yourself, and choose the amount of time you would like to rent the bike. In Kansas City, our bikes are $3 for every half hour. You get to enjoy a cool bike, sponsored in part by Blue Cross Blue Shield (whose information is displayed on the bike) with a handy little basket on the handlebar.  Bicycles can be rented 24/7, how cool is that?

Not only does kansascity.bcycle.com have the B-Cycle Now app, they also offer customized lunch and learn/presentations for your place of business/apartment that demonstrate how B-Cycle works. Just visit them online; where you can also find events, free bike days, and discounted equipment.

All in all, I enjoyed the app and couldn’t really find any disadvantages with it; however, there are a few disadvantages to the program. I wish there were more locations throughout the city; they are heavily concentrated downtown, Waldo, The Country Club Plaza and Westport. Perhaps we could have a few more setup near bike trails, or parks. If you do not have a form of plastic (debit/credit card) you cannot rent at the stations. If you have small children, you would have to provide bicycles for them. Lastly, you may want to bring your own locking device as you are responsible for the bike while it is in your possession.

Happy cycling!
